Colville Roundabout
Improvements to US 395 in Colville began as a study to "bypass" downtown Colville. After the community led project discovered that moving traffic off "main street" would assure the demise of some local businesses, the planning group developed a phased approach to improvements that would protect the viability of downtown businesses while also providing alternative routes for truck traffic. As part of the community led design approach, the Hawthorne Roundabout project was conceived to increase intersection capacity, provide ease of turning movements for trucks, and provide a "gateway" into the community. This project required high sensitivity to the existing commercial uses adjacent to the intersection, including the shopping center, a motel and a gasoline station. The roundabout is at the intersection of US395/Main Street and Hawthorne Avenue. The roundabout center island was utilized to construct a city gateway for the south end of the city, and incorporated a boulder rock wall, landscaping, a city sign and accent lighting. The roundabout connects two major arterials, provides access to a third arterial one block west of the intersection, and for a future connection to a planned truck route to relieve traffic from the downtown area.
